Buzzer Practices

The Society runs buzzer practices twice weekly during term, usually focusing on quizbowl-style questions (which are a bit longer than University Challenge starters). Mondays, especially in Michaelmas, are intended to be a bit more novice-friendly, while Wednesday practices tend to be more tailored towards tournament preparation and are hence a bit harder, though all our practices are open to anyone who would like to come. Details are circulated on our Facebook group and via our mailing list. To learn more about the ins and outs of quizbowl, check out the UK Quizbowl website.

Especially keen quizzers may be interested in taking part in the inter-university tournaments that happen several times each term, with some in Michaelmas directly intended as novice events. These vary substantially in difficulty; again, details are generally circulated nearer the time.

Pub Quizzes

During term-time, CUQS run weekly Sunday-night pub quizzes at the Mitre, on Bridge Street. We start at 20.30 with entry costing 1 per person. So for your chance to win some alcoholic prizes and to try to beat our question-setters, come along! For members or other Cantabrigians who find themselves cast out into the real world, the Quiz Britain website lists pub quizzes over the whole country, so you should be able to find one near you.

Intercollegiate Quiz

Every year we run and organise the prestigious ICQ tournament, starting in Lent and continuing into Easter term. The Championship is an opportunity for quizzers to play competitively with buzzers and offers excellent practice for those seeking fame on University Challenge, with questions of a similar style. Invitations to submit a team are sent to all members of the society, though nonmembers are equally welcome. For further information on previous tournaments and past winners visit our ICQ page.

University Challenge

Applications to go on the show are usually arranged through each college's JMA or JCR President. If you are interested on appearing on the show and no information has been provided by the end of October, contact Granada Production. For those arranging teams, we can offer the hire of University Challenge style buzzers for a small fee and also arrange for questions of varying difficulties, both for holding trials and for practising if your team is chosen to appear on the show. We also hold some buzzer practice sessions, open to anyone who wants to improve their skills. More details by email nearer the time (so get on our mailing list if you're not already!).
